Christoph Martens
Christoph Martens strives to be as self-sustaining as possible in the city. He holds down multiple occupations, he works as: a grocer at the Kootenay Co-op food store, a hair stylist out of his own home, he is a performance pianist and he runs his own business, "Urban Acres." He doesn’t have a lot of time for the garden but with the right planning he grows much of his own food all year round. He also raises egg-laying chickens and outlines the value of eating home grown eggs. Further, he demonstrates the season extension technique of using a cold frame. In the mountainous region of the Kootenays, Canada, during the peak of the winter season, Kristof is growing lettuce!
Tom Prior
Tom Prior learned to garden when he was a young boy on his grandparents farm in Quebec. He runs an import/export fair trade business and is a social activist documentary filmmaker. He lives in the heart of Nelson and while his garden is somewhat unwieldy and unconventional he successfully grows many vegetables such as squash, tomatoes and heritage corn to ensure seed preservation. He believes in growing his own food for its high nutritional content and affordability.
Lily Mayall
Lily Mayall is a dedicated grandmother who is passionate about plants and growing vegetables. She is highly intuitive and connected to nature. Before moving to the city core of Nelson, she lived “off the grid” on a farm on a remote island for thirty years. She gives a garden tour with her two grandchildren, and shares with them the wonders of growing flowers, herbs and vegetables.
